STAAR Surgical Company's corporate office and U.S. headquarters is located in Monrovia, California. The company also has a European headquarters in Switzerland and distributors throughout the world.
STAAR Surgical Company was founded in 1982 with the goal of creating and manufacturing the world's first foldable intraocular lens (IOL) for cataract surgery. As the company grew, it expanded its focus to include refractive surgery and glaucoma treatments.
In 1993, STAAR Surgical Company began feasibility studies on a phakic IOL, referred to as an implantable contact lens. Three years later, the company began to market its ICL in selected countries. In 1997, the company's implantable contact lens received the CE Marking, which indicates that the product was approved by the European Union (EU). The EU represents 28 countries.
STAAR Surgical Company continued to complete the required trials in the United States and in 2005 received FDA approval for the Visian ICL. (At the FDA's request, STAAR Surgical Company markets the ICL as an implantable Collamer lens, rather than an implantable contact lens, in the United States.) There are three models of the Visian ICL (one to treat myopia or nearsightedness, one to treat myopia with astigmatism, and one to treat hyperopia, or farsightedness) available outside the United States, but currently only the myopic version has received FDA approval. The Visian Toric ICL™ (TICL) is under review with the U.S. FDA.
STAAR and Collamer are registered trademarks of STAAR Surgical Company. Visian ICL, Visian TICL, and Visian Toric ICL are trademarks of STAAR Surgical Company.
